SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt says player returning to South Africa from abroad, including Benni McCarthy, will struggle to adapt to the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

According to Hunt, Europe’s more structured football, where the emphasis is more on team-work than individual flair, is markedly different from local soccer, where the players do far more running with the ball at their feet.

This was in a response to a question over the performance of centre-back Nasief Morris, who in the first half particular of the 5-2 MTN8 loss to Ajax Cape Town, looked rather sluggish and off the pace.

“The football is different here – most players in South Africa run faster than the ball,” he said at a press conference.

“In Europe the ball is circulated and it’s easier, whereas here in Africa, we run faster so the game is much quicker.

“So players that come back from Europe, like Benni and all of them, they will struggle in this league because of the pace of the game – the movement of the players is very quick here.”
