Katlego Mphela will return to training with Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday after failing to win a contract with Glasgow Celtic.

‘Killer’ was informed he would not be moving to the SPL on Friday after spending five days on trial in Scotland.

Club president Patrice Motsepe had given him special dispensation to attend and Mphela says he will return to Chloorkop to begin preparations for the new PSL season.

“I still have a contract with Sundowns but there are other clubs who have shown an interest,” he told KickOff.com.

“We will have to see what happens but it’s up to me to pick myself up now. I was really hoping things would work out with Celtic but it’s difficult to try and prove yourself in just a few days.”

Ukrainians Dynamo Kiev and Israeli champions Maccabi Haifa have also expressed an interest in signing the 26-year-old but with just one month until the European transfer window closes, time is running out.

Mphela currently stands third in Bafana Bafana’s all-time top scorers’ list with 19 goals and with the 2014 World Cup draw having taken place in Rio on Saturday, he will certainly fancy his chances of eventually catching Benni McCarthy’s record of 33.

But Killer says Pitso Mosimane’s side will not be taking Central African Republic, Botswana and Somalia or Ethiopia lightly.

“You could say it is easy but the standard is improving everywhere all the time in Africa,” he said.

“Botswana have already qualified for the African Cup of Nations and it will definitely not be easy. But we have the quality players with the experience so we just need to try and get ahead in the group and not be big-headed about it.

“If we can start with a few wins early on then we don’t have to rely on anyone else.”
