Benni McCarthy may still be far from full fitness but Julio Leal says he has a “positive effect on the squad”.

McCarthy was on the field for 74 minutes, and looked clever with the ball at his feet, although he struggled to cope with the pace of the game. He was replaced by Bongani Ndulula late on.

“McCarthy is a tactically aware player and psychologically it worked well for us that he started the match,” said Leal, according to Kickoff.com.

“Okay, I was worried a bit about him starting against a team as organised as Sundowns, but I am happy that he added value. He did well as he combines well with other players though he is obviously not 100 percent fit as yet.

“He wasn’t with the team in pre-season, so I don’t expect him to be at the top of his game as yet.

“But what I like is that he is very committed to the programme that he has to follow. I still want him to lose weight and it is good that he is coping well with the programme that he is working on with the fitness trainer.

“His experience has a positive effect on the squad.”
