The Dutch coach was mobbed by jubilant Bucs fans after the match who were grateful for bringing league glory back to the Soweto giants.

Orlando Pirates coach Ruud Krol believes the experience in the squad this season was the key to his side being crowned League Champions on Saturday.

Coming into their last match of the League, Pirates were two points behind leaders Ajax Cape Town, who drew 2-2 with Maritzburg United, but their 2-1 victory over Golden Arrows resulted in them being crowned the Premiership Champions for the first time since 2002/03 season.

However, having lost the League title to SuperSport United in the 2008/09 season on goal difference, Krol says his side had gained experience over the past two seasons and also got used to his system.

“Of course, all the players became more experienced, but the most important thing is that everybody got used to the system,” he said.

“We managed to pull through our problems with that experience. Sometimes we lost important players, like Daine (Klate) and Moeneeb (Josephs) but we had reserve players and we fought hard for everything.

“I must compliment all the players, the club, the chairman, technical staff, medical staff, kit staff; everyone did a great job this season.”

Krol said he believed that his side could still win the title, though Ajax were huge favourites.

“We had to believe! I told you recently that I still believed in miracles and the miracle happened today,” he said at a press conference.

“You could also see from the statistics from the past four years that the teams who are on top of the log never win the last match and that happened again.

“I think we started the match very well and I think we deserved the goal that we got. We were sloppy in defending from a set piece and they scored. Then in the second-half Isaac (Chansa) scored. He is our top scorer and it was a fantastic goal.

“I told my players that we deserved it as we worked hard for it, but it was a difficult match; very competitive but we were lucky that we scored that winning goal that brought us the championship.

“Hopefully we can continue with this next week but of course the Nedbank Cup Final will not be an easy match,” he added.
