Bafana Bafana will renew their rivalry with north African giants Morocco in two friendly clashes, South African Football Association (SAFA) spokesperson Matlhomola Morake confirmed on Monday.

The first encounter is scheduled for October 11 in Agadir City, with the Atlas Lions then visiting South Africa for the ‘return’ fixture next year.

“Yes we are going to face Morocco in the second week of October,” Morake told Sport24.

“It is not a tournament or a competitive game but it will be a two-legged friendly encounter.

“Morocco will come to South Africa next year for a return match.”

It will be the fifth meeting between the two sides with Bafana holding a superior record over the Lions.

The two teams first clashed in the 1998 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals in Burkina Faso when South Africa triumphed 2-1 courtesy of Benni McCarthy and David Nyathi strikes under Jomo Sono’s tenure.

Bafana also defeated the Lions 3-2 at AFCON 2002 in Mali with Sibusiso Zuma, Thabo Mngomeni and Siyabonga Nomvethe grabbing the goals for Carlos Queiroz’s men.

The two previous meetings ended in 1-1 and 2-2 AFCON stalemates.

Bafana coach Gordon Igesund will be looking to start a new chapter for the South African football as he is now focusing on AFCON 2015 to be held in Morocco as well as the 2018 Soccer World Cup in Russia.

Kick-off time for the first leg encounter against Morocco is yet to be announced.
