Manchester City have failed with a second attempt to sign Holland captain Mark van Bommel.

City tried to land AC Milan midfielder Van Bommel in January and went back in for the 34-year-old this summer.

City manager Roberto Mancini wants to add an experienced midfielder as Yaya Toure will be heading for Africa Cup of Nations duty in January.

But Van Bommel, who recently signed a one-year extension at the San Siro, said: ‘Milan has a very clear position and I am perfectly happy to live with that, my family feels at home here. I feel good as a footballer here and feel fully appreciated.

‘Manchester City first tried to sign me last winter, they were one of the clubs interested in me, so their interest has not come out of the blue,’ he told Voetbal International.

Van Bommel’s agent Mino Raiola said: ‘The message of AC Milan was clear. Mark van Bommel is not for sale under any circumstances.

‘They (City) have the problem that Yaya Toure will spend considerable time out because of the matches for the African Cup.

‘In addition, they also know that Mark van Bommel is excellent alongside Nigel de Jong. Hence they came in again for him.’
