Manchester United legend David Beckham has urged the club to sign Wesley Sneijder to replace the retired Paul Scholes.

Sir Alex Ferguson has targeted the Holland playmaker this summer but the move stalled after Inter Milan demanded £35million for their star midfielder.

But Beckham, who played for LA Galaxy as they lost to Manchester City 7-6 on penalties on Sunday night, believes his former club should persist with their chase of Sneijder as he is the man capable of filling the gaping hole in United’s midfield.

‘Scholes is the one player they want to replace,’ Beckham said. ‘He is such a great talent and he will be missed. They’re going to have to get someone special.

‘There’s a lot of talk about Wesley Sneijder. He’s such a talented player, a great guy as well. I’m sure he would fit right into a United team.’
