Lazio keeper Federico Marchetti is wanted by no less than four Premier League clubs, with Manchester United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City all thought to be watching the Italian international.

Reports in Italy suggest that Barcelona have identified Marchetti as one of three candidates, alongside Borussia Monchengladbach’s Marc-Andre ted Stegen and Liverpool’s Pepe Reina, to replace Victor Valdes in goal at the Camp Nou next season.

But according to Rome-based daily Il Tempo, the Catalan club could face fierce competition from England for the 30-year-old stopper.

Manchester City have been heavily linked with a move as Manuel Pellegrini seeks competition for Joe Hart, while Arsenal also require a long-term back-up for Wojciech Szczesny with Emiliano Viviano only on loan.

Both United and Tottenham seem to be set for first-choice goalkeepers but may be intrigued by the prospect of signing an Italian international who may be content not to be first-choice, at least initially.

Both Lazio and Marchetti have endured a difficult start to the season, but many still regard the former Cagliari player as the best keeper in Serie A.

Speaking ahead of Lazio’s Europa League match against Apollon Limassol Marchetti said: “We are going through a difficult time.

“We had two positive results against Cagliari and AC Milan but the defeat against Genoa was a bad slip-up.

“The spirit in the group did not crack. We looked at each other and said we have to do more because this is not enough.

“In the league we are not in the position that we deserve and now we must chase our rivals and look to the future.”

However, whether Marchetti’s personal future lies with Lazio or further afield now appears to be in some doubt.
