Manchester City face strong competition from Juventus in the race to sign Brazilian midfielder Fernando.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini has made Porto sensation Fernando one of his main summer transfer targets. The billionaires are confident of luring him to the Etihad Stadium on a free transfer with the promise of a £140,000-a-week deal.

Fernando, 26, is running down his contract at the Portuguese outfit and has told them he will be leaving at the end of the season.

But it has emerged that Italian giants Juve are also keen on Fernando and want to hijack his proposed move to England.

It is understood Juve chief executive Giuseppe Marotta has held talks with Fernando’s representatives in the hope of persuading him to join them instead.

The Italian champions have also made him one of their main transfer targets, but Marotta will know his club cannot compete with City when it comes to finances.

It promises to be a difficult few months for Fernando as speculation grows about his immediate future following his refusal to pen a new deal with the club.

Porto president Pinto da Costa ordered manager Paulo Fonseca to drop him from the squad after it emerged City wanted to sign him.

But Fonseca is reluctant to leave out one of his most important stars considering Porto trail main rivals Benfica and Sporting Lisbon in the Primeira Liga.

The expected arrival of Fernando at the Etihad could see Pellegrini decide to sell Spanish midfielder Javi Garcia.
