Arsenal defender Johan Djourou has emerged as a surprise summer transfer target of Italian club Juventus.

And Arsenal will be tempted to cash in on Djourou, as they look to free up space to sign Ajax star Jan Vertonghen.

Djourou first caught the attention of Juve last season, when he made a series of impressive performances as a stand-in central defender while Thomas Vermaelen was injured.

Despite the fact his form has dipped this season at both centre-back and as an emergency right-back, Juve have maintained their interest.

Djourou activated an option to extend his Arsenal contract until 2015 in February, but that will not stop the club listening to offers.

The Gunners are keen to land £10m-rated Vertonghen, who can play in the centre of defence or at left-back, but manager Arsene Wenger wants to create space within his squad.

Wenger will also look to offload Sebastien Squillaci this summer and ideally wants to start next season with Vermaelen, Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Vertonghen as his choice of central defenders.
