Liverpool will look to seal a deal for AC Milan midfielder Nigel de Jong if Lucas Leiva’s injury proves to be serious.

The Anfield side are waiting to learn the extent of the knee damage that Leiva suffered during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Aston Villa. The 27-year-old has faced difficult spells with injuries in recent years, having missed over half the 2011-12 season after suffering a cruciate injury in his left knee during a game against Chelsea.

Leiva lasted just 20 minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute and reportedly left Merseyside on crutches after the game.

Liverpool have won nine of their 11 Premier League games at Anfield this season with just one defeat and one draw.

And if Lucas’ injury proves to be more serious then first thought, Rodgers will move for de Jong to replace the Brazilian in the squad.

De Jong left Manchester City for Milan in 2012 following his three-and-a-half year spell in the Premier League.

Reports in Italy claim negotiations will prove difficult for Liverpool as new boss Clarence Seedorf is positive he wants to keep de Jong at the San Siro.

Seedorf is looking to kick-starts the flagging Italian giants after replacing Massimiliano Allegri as manager following this poor start to the season.
