Riccardo-Saponara-EmpoliLiverpool will bid for midfielder Riccardo Saponara next summer despite Empoli insisting they won’t sell their star man, claim reports in Italy.

Reds manager Jurgen Klopp is seeking to bring 23-year-old Saponara to Anfield and act as competition for Philippe Coutinho.

That is according to Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who claim Saponara is available for around £10.5million.

Saponara has scored 11 goals for Empoli in 2015 and can play either in central midfield or behind the strikers.

He quit Milan back in January after struggling to get game time at the San Siro and made his move to Empoli permanent in the summer after a brief loan spell.

Fellow Italian newspaper La Nazione say Liverpool are dead set on landing this player but concede a January deal will be difficult to push through.

“No-one will move in January,” Empoli sporting director Marcello Carli said last month.

“We’ll keep all our players. Then in June we’ll evaluate any offers that come in, in line with club policy.

“We’re used to rumours about our players, it means we’re doing well. Saponara in particular is an important player for us.”

Instead, Liverpool will prepare a summer approach in the hope of convincing the Italian to switch Serie A for the Premier League.

Saponara is under contract at Empoli until 2018 and it is claimed both Juventus and Roma are keeping an eye on the talented playmaker should he decide to quit the Tuscan club.
