Manchester City will have to dig deeper into their pockets than £31m to sign the winger Alexis Sánchez from Udinese. Barcelona and Internazionale are also thought to be interested in the 22-year-old Chile international.

“Sánchez? The right offer has yet to arrive, €35m is not enough for Sánchez,” Udinese’s owner, Gianpaolo Pozzo, said. “We already turned down a similar offer. A higher offer is needed.

“Sánchez is a very important player and we will see what happens but I have already spoken to Alexis and his agent. He is a player that has plenty of requests but his value is high. It’s not an easy transfer for those that want to buy him.

“He and his agent are intelligent people and they are the first to understand that we cannot give him away on the cheap.”

Sánchez, who is under contract until June 2014, scored 12 goals last season to help Udinese qualify for the Champions League.
