Manchester United’s quest to sign Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi appears to be over after the Italian club confirmed they would reject all bids for the player.

De Rossi was the subject of an opening offer worth £12million from United on Friday morning, as David Moyes looks to add some steel to his midfield ahead of the close of the transfer window this evening.

Speaking to Sky Sport Italia ahead of Sunday evening’s game against Hellas Verona, Roma’s general manager Mauro Baldissoni said: ‘As for De Rossi, we will always reply ‘no thank you’ to any formal offer that is proposed for him, as would the player.

‘Both Roma and Daniele are coming off a year that didn’t go well and we want to make up for that together.

‘The club doesn’t intend to accept offers for De Rossi and he has not intention of leaving us.’

Sportsmail understands that United are not planning to return with a second offer for the Italian international and are now focusing all their efforts on recruiting Everton’s Marouane Fellaini and Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera.

David Moyes has also not given up hope of to pushing through the signing of Leighton Baines by tonight’s 11pm deadline.
