Wesley Sneijder has suggested he would have joined Manchester United should Sir Alex Ferguson have made a move during the January transfer window.

The Inter Milan playmaker was one of United’s top targets to replace the then-retired Paul Scholes last summer, but his £250,000-a-week wages proved too expensive for the Premier League champions.

Money is no problem, however, for both Manchester City and mega-rich Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala, who are also interested in Sneijder’s signature.

Sneijder, 27, is under contract with Inter until June 2015 but admits he faces an uncertain future in Italy following a poor first half to the season in Serie A that has seen Inter struggle.

The Nerazzuri have battled back to fifth place in the table but face a fight to qualify for the Champions League next season.

While the Holland star admits negotiations never took off with United, he hinted that he was aware of interest from Manchester.

‘There have never been any concrete contacts with Manchester United,’ said Sneijder. ‘I see everything, I am not blind, but there is nothing concrete right now.

‘I am happy at Inter, but we will see. I currently have no contacts with other clubs and I am living day by day.

‘If on the last day of the transfer window an offer had arrived, maybe I would have left.

‘The truth is that I feel at home at Inter, but I do not know where I will play next season.’

Sneijder also dismissed the idea of joining the likes of David Beckham and Thierry Henry in the MLS. He admitted he could play in America at some point in his career, but not for now.

‘A spell in the USA? That is something I think about, but only in the future,’ Sneijder said. ‘I do not think where I will play next season. I have been in the USA with Yolanthe [his wife] because of her work.

‘We will surely discuss this in the future, but not now.’
